The Cape York meteorite, or Innaanganeq meteorite, ranks among the largest iron meteorites, categorized as a medium octahedrite within chemical group IIIAB. Its name is derived from Cape York, a notable geographic landmark situated about 30 miles west of Meteorite Island’s east coast and the adjacent peninsulas in northern Melville Bay, Greenland, where the initial meteorite pieces were found. The exact date of the meteorite fall remains uncertain but is believed to have occurred within the last few thousand years. The local Inuit, known as the Inughuit, have been familiar with it for centuries, utilizing the meteoritic iron for crafting tools!
