This full slice of the famous Springwater meteorite is a remarkable example of a Pallasite, a rare type of stony-iron meteorite recognized for its exceptional structure of olivine crystals embedded in a nickel-iron matrix. Springwater is particularly noted for its striking rounded olivine crystals, prominently visible in various specimens.
Historically, Springwater is distinguished as the first Pallasite ever discovered in Canada and serves as the type occurrence for the magnesium phosphate mineral Farringtonite (Mg3[PO4]2). To date, over 119 kg (262 lb) of the Springwater Pallasite has been recovered, with notable finds like a 53 kg (117 lb) piece discovered in 2009, now housed at the Royal Ontario Museum.
The initial specimen, which weighed 18.6 kg (41 lb), was obtained and described by the eminent meteoriticist H. H. Nininger in the early 1930s. This specimen became part of the Nininger Meteorite Collection, significantly aiding the establishment of the ASU Center for Meteorite Studies after its acquisition in 1960.
About Stony-Iron Meteorites: Stony-iron meteorites, the rarest and often considered the most visually-desirable of the three meteorite categories, consist of iron-nickel, silicate minerals and gemstones. Within the stony-iron category, we have two different types: Pallasites and Mesosiderites.
