Gao, officially named Gao-Guenie, was a witnessed fall on March 5, 1960. Initially, there was confusion about two distinct falls in Burkina Faso a month apart, but specimens collected under both names are identical. It is now recognized as one fall with the combined name. Thousands of stones have been discovered and are still being recovered from the region. This meteorite is classified as an H5 chondrite. This is a stunning example of Gao-Guenie, and is beautifully crusted and shaped!
About Stony Meteorites: Stony meteorites are the most common meteorites, making up the majority of the meteorites discovered here on Earth. They are divided into two groups: chondrites, which are some of the oldest primitive material in our entire solar system, and achondrites, which include meteorites that derived from our moon and Mars.
