DID YOU KNOW?
NASA tested Mars Rovers and other equipment using desert dust from Earth?
To accurately replicate the Martian surface, material must match the unique mineral composition of Mars soil. One of the best terrestrial sources is California’s Saddleback Mountain in the Mojave Desert, where volcanic eruptions over 20 million years ago created iron-rich basaltic rock — the perfect playground for testing Mars conditions here on Earth. You are viewing that very same dust!
Made from the same Mojave Desert basalt (MMS-1) chosen by NASA and JPL, this simulant closely replicates the iron-rich, basalt-like nature of real Martian regolith.
Using this simulant helps prepare rovers, landers, and scientific instruments for the harsh challenges of Mars — including dust storms, extreme temperature swings, and abrasive, clingy soil.
Please Note: While basalt is a non-toxic rock, small particles such as this dust pose an inhalation hazard. Use face/eye protection if opening the vial.
