The Hammadah al Hamra 346, also known as Ghadamis, is a striking meteorite recovered from the deserts of Libya. First observed as a brilliant fireball on August 26, 2018, the stones were collected in early 2019 from a strewn field located about 95 km southwest of Ash Shuwayrif, in the Jabal al Gharbi district.

Classified as an L6 ordinary chondrite, HaH 346 belongs to the largest family of meteorites but remains special thanks to its remarkable freshness. This fall produced stones with almost no terrestrial alteration since its fall, making it a particularly desirable piece for collectors seeking well-preserved material.

This specimen displays a jet-black fusion crust with contraction cracks and subtle regmaglypts, giving it a dramatic, sculpted look. It also features beautiful contraction cracks along the crust.

Although often marketed under the name “Ghadamis,” the official designation is Hammadah al Hamra 346 (HaH 346). It is widely regarded as a possible observed fall, with the timing of the fireball and the freshness of recovered specimens strongly supporting this conclusion. Collectors prize it for its combination of witnessed history, excellent preservation, and striking visual character.

About Stony Meteorites:

Stony meteorites are the most common meteorites, making up the majority of the meteorites discovered here on Earth.  They are divided into two groups: chondrites, which are some of the oldest primitive material in our entire solar system originating from large asteroids, and achondrites, which include meteorites that derived from our moon and Mars.
