NWA 15923 meteorite is a type of meteorite known as a Eucrite, believed to have originated from the asteroid Vesta. It was discovered in 2022.
Eucrites are part of the HED group of meteorites—short for Howardite, Eucrite, and Diogenite. These three types are thought to come from different layers of Vesta, one of the largest bodies in the Asteroid Belt. Vesta’s surface bears the scars of giant impacts, one of which likely launched fragments of its crust into space. Some of those fragments, like this one, eventually made their way to Earth.
Between 2011 and 2017, NASA’s Dawn mission closely studied Vesta and confirmed it as the source of most HED meteorites. Vesta is a differentiated body, meaning it has a layered internal structure with a crust, mantle, and core—similar to Earth. Eucrites formed from the crust and carry valuable clues about the early processes that shaped our Solar System.
This specimen has been sliced to reveal its intricate structure - a clear melt boundary separating itself from the clasts, along with bubble vesicles from the intense heat during its journey —a small but fascinating window into the geology of a distant world.
