The Bondoc meteorite is one of the most impressive stony-iron meteorites ever recovered. It was discovered in 1956 on the Bondoc Peninsula of Luzon in the Philippines, where it had lain hidden in dense jungle. With a recovered mass of nearly 900 kilograms, Bondoc stands out not only for its size but also for its scientific importance. The meteorite was eventually transported out of the region and brought to wider attention by meteorite researcher and collector Harvey H. Nininger, allowing it to be studied in detail and preserved for future research.

Bondoc is classified as a mesosiderite, a rare type of meteorite made up of roughly equal parts silicate rock and iron-nickel metal. When cut and polished, it reveals a striking interior: large, rounded metal nodules embedded within a diverse silicate matrix containing minerals such as pyroxene and olivine. This unusual mixture is thought to have formed during violent collisions early in the solar system’s history, when impacts on a differentiated asteroid mixed metallic core material with rocky crust. Today, slices of the Bondoc meteorite are held in museums and research collections around the world, where they continue to provide insight into the complex processes that shaped planetary bodies billions of years ago.

About Stony-Iron Meteorites: Stony-iron meteorites, the rarest and often considered the most visually-desirable of the three meteorite categories, consist of iron-nickel, silicate minerals and gemstones. Within the stony-iron category, we have two different types: Pallasites and Mesosiderites.
